The Florida Orthopedic Surgeon Profiles


                             

President – George H. Canizares, MD

 

The current president of the Florida Orthopaedic Society, Dr. Canizares has been serving Florida since graduating from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. 


Currently part of All Florida Orthopaedic Associates, Dr. Canizares was also selected to the NFL Neutral Physician Examiners Panel and served as the team doctor for both the Miami Heat and Miami Sol. Additionally, Dr. Canizares has contributed in developing sports medicine programs in several Pinellas County schools. 


Dr. Canizares works in St. Petersburg, FL.


Past President John Nordt MD

 

Dr. John Nordt, Florida Orthopaedic Society’s Past President, continues to perform orthopedic surgery after over 40 years in the field. Based in Coral Gables, Florida, he is internationally known for his knowledge of spinal surgery and care. This has placed him amongst surgeons who are commonly faced with complex and challenging spine disorders, fractures and revisions.

 

In addition to practicing at The Spine Center of Miami, Dr. Nordt is affiliated with several hospitals in the area. Dr. Nordt received his medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine.

 

1st Vice President – David Chandler MD

 

With over 25 years of experience, Dr. David Chandler has extensive knowledge in spine surgery, spinal rehabilitation, and surgery of disorders regarding the spine. As a member of the Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, Florida, Dr. Chandler has been focused on cervical and lumbar injuries and fusions, non-surgical options for adult scoliosis, sport injuries to the spine, and degenerative disorders throughout the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions.

 

Dr. Chandler completed his medical degree at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

 

2nd Vice President – Steven Lyons MD

 

The Florida Orthopaedic Society’s 2nd Vice President, Dr. Steven Lyons, is an internationally renowned expert in advanced joint replacement and arthritis surgery. As a “Who’s Who in Orthopedics,” Dr. Lyons is constantly helping to design and outlay orthopedic technology related to his specialties.

 

Based in Tampa, Dr. Lyons performs several joint and arthritis procedures, but his main focus at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute is on hip and knee replacement.


Secretary/Treasurer – Steve Lucie MD

 

Dr. Stephen Lucie is based out of Jacksonville, where he has specialized for several years in orthopaedic sports medicine and total joint replacement. His knowledge has led to affiliations with several sports teams, including the Jacksonville Sharks, Jacksonville University, the Bolles School, and the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.

 

Outside of his work at the Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute, Dr. Lucie is an avid runner and has contributed his medical knowledge to a bevy of Jacksonville running events.

  • Aaron Guyer, M.D.  (2018-2nd Term)
    • Dr. Guyer is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon based in Tallahassee, where he is a part of the Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic. He graduated with an undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University, and a medical degree from SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Focused on foot and ankle surgery, he received a fellowship in the specialty from the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic. Dr. Guyer joined the Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic in 2007.

  • Lawrence Halperin, M.D. (2017)
    • Born in Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Halperin has been a resident of Orlando since 1990. After graduating from Tulane University with a B.S. in biological chemistry, he received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center’s College of Medicine. In addition to his overall specialization in orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Halperin focuses on injuries and repairs to the hands and upper extremities. Dr. Halperin practices at the Orlando Orthopaedic Center and sits on the board of the Florida Orthopaedic Society, the board of the Orange County Medical Society, and is a member of the American Medical Association and American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

  • David Cheong, M.D. (2017-1st Term)
    • Dr. Cheong is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with practices based in Clearwater and Safety Harbor. He specializes in malignant and benign disorders of the musculoskeletal system, limb preservation services, bone, soft tissue and complex joint reconstruction, as well as non-invasive expandable limb implants in cases of malignant bone tumors. For his training in complex joint reconstruction and orthopaedic oncology, Dr. Cheong received a fellowship from the University of Miami.  In addition to his medical practices, Dr. Cheong serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery for the University of South Florida.

  • Kevin Shrock, M.D. (2017- 1st Term)
    • Dr. Kevin Shrock is an orthopedic surgeon affiliated with multiple hospitals in the Fort Lauderdale area, namely Broward Health Medical Center and Westside Regional Medical Center. After graduating with a medical degree from Stanford University’s School of Medicine, completed a general surgery internship with Northwestern’s McGaw Medical Center and a residency at Harvard University’s General Hospital Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program. Dr. Shrock has now been in practice for over 20 years.

  • Michael Jablonski, M.D. (2018-1st Term)
    • Dr. Michael Joblonski is currently the President of Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic, which has locations in both Orlando and Lake Mary, Florida. With a focus on sports medicine, Dr. Jablonski specializes in joint replacement and arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee and shoulder. Dr. Jablonski graduated with a medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine – where he also had his residency – and completed a fellowship with the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama.

  • Douglas Dew, M.D. (2018- 2nd term)
    • Douglas Dew is an orthopaedic surgeon and inventor based in Saint Augustine, FL. He holds undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Miami (Miller School of Medicine) and an MBA from the George Washington University School of Business. After medical school, he founded Laser Surgery Software, which specialized in laser tissue welding & thermal modification. Now he is co-founder and CEO of Automated Clinical Guidelines, a medical knowledge IT firm that focuses on pre-authorization, compliance, coding, and clinical documentation. In addition to his business and future board membership at FOS, Dr. Dew serves as a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCF and on the Board of Councilors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

  • Stephen Quinnan, M.D.
    • Dr. Stephen Quinnan is an American Board of Orthopedic Surgery certified trauma surgeon affiliated with the University of Miami Hospital. Currently an assistant professor of clinical orthopedics at The University of Miami, the multi-lingual surgeon specializes in orthopedic surgery and can perform a wide range of surgical treatment. Dr. Quinnan received his M.D. from Colombia University in 2002 and has been in practice for over 15 years. 

  • Steven Weber, D.O. (CAC Alternate)
    • With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Steven Weber is a certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spinal reconstruction. Dr. Weber has the state of Michigan to thank for his extensive education. He attended undergrad at the University of Michigan and received his M.D. from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine where he completed his residency before moving to Florida. Dr. Weber operates out of the Orlando Orthopaedic Center and the Health Central Hospital in Central Florida.

  • Kevin Farmer, MD
    • Dr. Kevin Farmer is a board certified surgeon with focus in orthopedic sports medicine and a subspecialty in shoulder surgery. He’s a Johns Hopkins graduate who completed his residency in orthopedic surgery from the very same school after receiving his M.D. in 2003. Dr. Farmer is located in Gainesville, Florida and has affiliations with the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Shands Live Oak Regional Medical Center. Dr. Farmer is also a member of several orthopedic organizations. He currently serves as the team physician for the University of Florida Athletic Association and sits on the Board of Directors for the Florida Orthopaedic Society. He has published 12 book chapters and 30 peer-reviewed publications in various clinical journals.

  • Andrew Borom, M.D.
    • Dr. Andrew Borom is a foot & ankle orthopedic surgeon certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and received his medical degree from University of Virginia School of Medicine.

       

      Dr. Borom has medical licenses in three different states and has been in practice for over 20 years. His expertise in the musculoskeletal system and podiatry were nationally recognized when he graciously performed surgery free of charge for an Iraqi war veteran who was being rejected treatment. Care provided by Dr. Borom is performed out of multiple hospitals including Capital Regional Medical Center, Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, and the Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic

  • Brian Ziegler, M.D.
    • Dr. Brian Ziegler is a board certified physician based in Eastern Florida. He specializes in hand an upper extremity conditions out of the local Rockledge Area with Orthopaedics of Brevard. With over 20 years of dedicated practice, Dr. Ziegler has acquired membership in countless national and state medical societies – most notably the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Ziegler attended an accelerated undergraduate medical program at Penn State University before receiving his M.D. with Sidney Kimmel Medical College. In 1996, he received a fellowship at the University of Connecticut to perform hand surgery in conjunction with Hartford Hospital.

  • Maury Fisher, M.D.
    • Dr. Maury Fisher is a board certified general practicing orthopedic surgeon who has worked out of a private practice in Polk County, Florida since 1989. He specializes in computer navigated arthroscopic surgery at the Florida Joint and Spine Institute. Dr. Fisher received his M.D from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed three residencies of medical training throughout the state of Louisiana.

  • Thomas Bernasek, M.D.
    • Dr. Thomas Bernasek practices out of the greater Tampa, Florida area. As a board certified surgeon, Dr. Bernasek is fellowship trained in adult reconstructive surgery. His active involvement in research and development projects has lead to a large scale of recognition in the orthopedic field. Dr. Bernasek completed his education at Creighton University College of Medicine and a residency at the University of New Mexico, which set him up for a fellowship in joint replacement / reconstruction at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He’s also a founding member of the Florida Orthopaedic Institute and has lectured as an associate professor at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.
